Call Of The Mountains: The Beauty And Legacy Of Southern California’s San Jacinto, San Bernadino And San Gabriel Mountains (Hardcover)
Product Description
Although Southern California’s mountain ranges are only partially wilderness, they bring wonder into our daily lives even from a distance. I wrote this book to remind us of this wonder, to champion the mountains’ beauty and inspire their protection. In addition, I wrote this book for people around the world to know a seldom heralded dimension of Southern California. Several years ago I couldn’t find such a book to show Swiss friends. Also I’ve always wanted to show our mountains’ beauty to friends and relatives across the country, to come and visit them vicariously. “Call of the Mountains” is for you who can’t get to the mountains, but glimpse them from afar and feel their wonder. Last, I wrote this book for you who already know these streams, canyons and peaks. For you, the following pages will jog memories of special places and occasions that are yours alone. My Story - and the stories of people I met - takes us along trails to historic areas, sparkling waterfalls, pristine meadows and the highest peaks.

Call of The Mountains is a beautiful book……
Olander’s book is a fantastic coffee table book and at the same time a tour guide and history book. I thoroughly enjoy this book each time I open it- which is often.
Thank you Ann and Farley Olander. My husband and I have always enjoyed the mountains, and the San Gabriel Mountains hold a special place in our hearts. It is so nice seeing California mountains so lushly photographed with important prose. Our friends pick it up to look at the photos, but always end up reading it as well. It is truly an inspired partnership that created this work or art.

Beautiful
This book is filled with both stunning photography and graceful prose. Call of the Mountains spans an 18 month period in which the Olanders explored their local mountain ranges…
Growing up, our family vacations were spent hiking and camping. With my father being a teacher, the locations we’d choose to explore most often had historical or cutural value to them. For these reasons, this book made the perfect gift for my parents last Christmas.
In fact, it inspired them to spend their next spring break exploring the three mountain ranges highlighed in this book!
Call of the Mountains is a wonder-lovely treasure. The authors-inveterate hikers and photographers who live in the Los Angeles suburbs-invite us into their world view of their home mountains, showing us pristine natural spots that are surrounded by and still able to co-exist within close proximity of our country’s fastest-growing urban area. The fourteen gorgeous color-photo essays comprising the book showcase Southern California’s San Jacinto, San Bernardino, and San Gabriel Mountains: the peaks, lakes, streams, flowers and trees in their alpine and desert habitats throughout the seasons. My favorite chapter is “Baldy Prospects,” the photo narrative describing Los Angeles’ “signature” peak, Mount San Antonio or Mount Baldy. We see how groups of volunteers are collaborating with government entities to conserve the canyons and lower-elevation portions of the mountain from further urban sprawl. The photos throughout the book, however, provide proof to readers that these mountainous areas must be preserved. Anyone who opens the book won’t be able to put it down until she has at least browsed through it from beginning to end–the color photos and layout and design are indeed spectacular.

Great Pictures, nice read
A well composed photographic book. One of few books of it’s kind which highlights Southern California’s ever present but, often over-looked mountain ranges.

Do not categorize this book as simply another coffee table book!
This is much more than a book with great pictures. Ann & Farley Olander show the rest of us how we can enjoy the quiet beauty and simple pleasures of the wilderness next door…
